Best Caribbean Beaches

While the Caribbean is plentiful with great beaches, most of the shore line is rocky, and when you do find sand, it’s usually a mediocre patch rather than a the fabulous tropical pink or white powder beaches that we associate with the caribbean.

Our definition of a great beach is one with pink or white powder sand, clear & warm turquoise water, un-crowded, away from the masses of tourists on hotel lounge chairs. Ideally they may also be dotted with coconut palms or set in a backdrop of tropical foliage or cliffs, and snorkelling and the presence of tropical fish in the clear unspoiled water is a plus.

How do the great Caribbean sand beaches emerge?

Caribbean White Sand/Coral Beaches
The white coral sand originates primarily from the Parrot fish who use their beaks to scrape off coral rock and food. The fish digest algae or living corals and expel the inorganic compounds as fine white sand. One fish can produce tons of soft white sand each year.

Caribbean Pink Sand Beaches
The Pink Sand is the result of the red shells of tiny sea creatures ca lled "foraminifera" . These tiny creatures live beneath rocks and inside caves. The red shells are broken up by the surf into fine, soft pink colored sand.

Best Caribbean Beaches

Grace Bay Beach, Turks and Caicos
Grace Bay's 12 mile stretch of sand is white and fine as baby powder, the water is turquoise, calm - protected by a barrier reef - and safe for swimming. The beach is part of a national marine park so development is strictly controlled, as are motorized water sports. The fine white sand here is easily one of the finest swaths of beach in the Caribbean. The fact that the beach also rarely gets crowded, even in high-season, only adds to its appeal.

Grace Bay Beach

Harbour Island Beach, Bahamas
This famous pink sand beach is said to be one of the world's most photographed beaches. It's a 3-mile stretch of powder coral sand, named for its pink colour because of flecks of red coral mixed with fine sugar-white sand.

Harbour Island Beach

West Bay Beach, Roatan, Honduras
West Bay Beach is an un crowded, powdery white, sandy beach with sparkling, exceptional turquoise clear blue waters. It is located on the world's second largest barrier reef in a protected marine park Here you can experience the added attraction of excellent snorkeling and scuba diving, just yards off the beach.

Roatan honduras beach

Seven Mile Beach, (Cemetery Beach) Cayman Islands.
Seven Mile Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand that curls around the West of the island. A reef protects the coast and ensures that the water is calm and ideal for swimming and snorkelling. This is the most popular beach on the island and is bordered by dozens of hotels, but it is large enough to ensure sunbathers do not end up towel-to-towel, or chai to chair. It's crystal clear water reflects a light turqoise tint and meets the pure fine white sand. At the north end of seven mile beach, away from the hotels, is Cemetary Reef Beach, a nice little beach, great for sunning and swimming and some really good snorkleing in the reef areas just off-shore.

Cayman Island Seven Mile Beach

St-Jean Beach, St. Barts
A somewhat narrow, golden sandy beach, St-Jean is the gem of the island, reminiscent of the French Riviera (though you're supposed to keep your top on). Reefs protect the beach, making it ideal for swimming.
